Correct Method to Use FTPS in FileZilla for a Secure FTP Access

Before progressing further, let us understand 3 important terms mentioned in the title.

  1. FTPS: FTPS stands for File Transfer Protocol Secure. FTPS is a secure version of the popular File Transfer Protocol OR FTP. FTPS supports TLS (Transport Layer Security) and obsolete SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). Companies use FTPS to securely connect with and send files to their clients, users, and business associates.
  1. FileZilla: FileZilla is a free, open-source, cross-platform FTP downloadable application/software. It comprises 2 key applications, viz. FileZilla Client and FileZilla Server. FileZilla server supports FTP and FTPS, while the FileZilla client supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP servers. FileZilla Clients are available for Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems.
  1. FTP: FTP or File Transfer Protocol decides how computers transfer files between systems over the internet. Businesses use FTP to upload and download files from their website’s server.

Once FileZilla is installed successfully in your system, follow the method shown below.

1. Open FileZilla and locate the option “Site Manager.”

2. Click to open the Site Manager. You will see 4 tabs: General, Advanced, Transfer Settings, and Charset. It is important to configure all the settings, as shown below.

  1. You have to Select ‘FTP – File Transfer Protocol’ in the Protocol drop-down menu.
  2. In Host, You have to mention your domain
  3. In the Encryption dropdown menu, Select ‘Require explicit FTP over TLS’
  4. Add a Username in the user section

3. You will see 3 buttons at the bottom of the Site Manager screen, viz. Connect, OK, and Cancel. Now click on the Connect button. Correct configuration settings will grant you a secure FTP access connection to transfer files over the internet. Reconfirm the information entered in each of the fields.
